Nagoya is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and in the western part (Owari) of the same prefecture. It is one of Japan's leading cities, with a population of 2,286,000 people (current as of January 2016).
The current city of Nagoya was started by Edo shogunate founder Ieyasu Tokugawa as "Kiyosugoshi." He promoted the transfer of power to Nagoya from Kiyosu, which was the center of Owari Province at the time.
Manufacturing thrived within the Owari clan in the wake of the development of Nagoya castle and the town surrounding the castle, and even now Nagoya is recognized as "the center of Japanese manufacturing" both in name and in reality.
